Deacon. It
is a term that is full of meaning for many of you. As I think
about those individuals who have served as deacon in my life
there are several words that come to mind. Wisdom.
The deacons I have known were individuals who had the gift
of wise counsel. They were folks who could listen well and
speak thoughtfully. Encouraging.
Most of the deacons I have known have been people who knew
the power of a kind word fitly spoken. Dependable.
These folks were solid in their support of the church and the
congregation. They could be counted on. Giving. Somehow,
whenever there was a need of any kind in the church, these
people were the first in line to offer resources. Leader.
As
individuals, these folks led, not by authority, but by example.
They were not interested in recognition
but in seeing tasks completed. Servant. I
have seen college administrators, mill workers, owners of businesses,
CEO’s, teachers, stay at home parents, folks from all
walks of life called to serve the Body of Christ in the local
church who did so with grace and humility. Deacon. It
is a significant word for me.
We are in the time
in the life of this church when we nominate our new deacons.
We have chosen to ask the congregation to choose these folks.
Now we ask you to pray. Pray that those nominated will get a peace from the
Spirit that they are to serve. Pray that those that do agree to serve will
feel empowered by the Spirit. Pray for all our deacons as they continue to
share wisdom, encourage, give, lead, and serve this congregation and community
in the name of Christ.
Keep Walking!
Stan
